New Zealands national art collection is held by Te Papa and dates back to 1865. by Mark Stocker Once overshadowed by painting, sculpture has high status as an art form in 21st-century New Zealand. However, a virtually complete run of the Coinage Design Advisory Committee’s meetings and related correspondence was gifted to, but long uncatalogued by, the Heritage Collections of Auckland Libraries. : New Zealand art at Te Papa: 28 cm, 376 pp, colour photo illus, d/w. It was long believed that the committee’s archive was lost, destroyed at the behest of the then Minister of Finance, Robert Muldoon, by obedient state servants. Te Papa holds New Zealand’s national art collection, the origins of which date back to 1865. In 1964 a committee of the ‘great and good’ was established to select suitable designs for the reverses of New Zealand’s forthcoming decimal coinage.
